1947 obituary. South Portland, Oct. 26-Clarence E. Adams, 89, of 62 Keswick Road, who had been employed for more than 40 years as a watchman at the Canal National Bank, Portland, before retiring in 1940, died today in a Portland hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Adams was born at Calais Dec. 28, 1857, son of Henry E. and Louisa Leeman Adams. He was educated in the schools there and went to sea at the age of 17 years. At the age of 21 he was master of his own ship. After leaving the sea, he worked for more than 40 years for the Canal National Bank. In 1917, at the age of 53, he enlisted in the navy. He was discharged a little more than a year later. Mr. Adams was a charter member of the Harold T. Andrews Post, AL, Portland Lodge of Masons; the Knights of Pythias, and was a past grand master of Hadattah Lodge, IOOF. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clement Dunning, Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Dunham, Needham, Mass.; a brother, William L. Adams, Yarmouth; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at 160 Ocean Street. Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery.
