Dorothy Jean Zimmerman Jones peacefully passed away in the early morning of Sunday, December 24, 2017. She shared a blessed and loving marriage of seventy-two years with her beloved husband.
Together, they were committed to their family, enjoyed their dear friends, and sought to care for the community in which they lived.
Dorothy was born in Bath, New York on March 11, 1924, to Harvey J. Zimmerman and Alice Jane Bailey Zimmerman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Wilson Zimmerman, and her daughter, Dorothy Jeanne Jones Holliday.
She grew up in the idyllic little town of Bradford, New York, graduated valedictorian from Bradford Central School in 1941, and received a four year New York State scholarship to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity. After two years in Ithaca she continued her education in New York City at the Cornell School of Nursing where she was a member of the Nursing Cadet Corps during World War II and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing with the class of 1946.
Dorothy met her future husband while he was in medical school at Cornell. They were married at New York’s Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church on September 15, 1945 and moved to Macon in 1950 for Dr. Jones to begin his medical practice. It was in Macon that they built their long life together, raising three daughters and a son, and opening their home to family and friends for whom she loved to cook.
Dorothy held dear her church, Vineville United Methodist Church. She and Dr. Jones were members of the Ed Cook Class and later the George S. Jones Class. As well, she was a children’s Sunday School teacher for many years, served on the church Administrative Board, and was a long-time circle leader for the United Methodist Women at Vineville. At one point she served as President of the Vineville UMW.
Because of her interest in the community, Dorothy became involved with many organizations. These included the Bibb County Medical Auxiliary of which she served as President for a term, the Vineville Garden Club, and the Macon History Club. Her special enthusiasm for music was reflected in her membership in the Morning Music Club, her love of the Macon Symphony Orchestra and the Macon Symphony Guild for which she also served as President, as well as her membership in the New York Metropolitan Opera Guild. She enjoyed many years of Metropolitan Opera performances in Atlanta and New York.
She was distinguished by her love and concern for her husband and family, cherishing the time with them on holidays and family trips, particularly the wonderful annual trips that the family enjoyed over the last fifty years to Sea Island.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy Asbell and Dr. Marcus Tripp officiating. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4-6 PM on Tuesday, December 26 in the Grand at Carlyle Place, 5300 Zebulon Road. In lieu of flowers and food, donations may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, the Arts and Music Program, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
