Arlyn “Augie” Dale Drom passed away peacefully in his sleep in Plano, Texas on November 25, 2017. He was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on May 8, 1928 to Mattie Myrtle (Hansen) and August Thomas Drom.

Augie was an outstanding student, athlete and leader. He graduated from New Lisbon High School (WI) as Salutatorian of the class of 1946. He enjoyed sports, lettering in football and basketball all 4 years. He played tuba in the band. He also served as class president, captain of the football and basketball teams and band president.

Augie enlisted in the US Navy in June 1946, the day after his high school graduation. He served at the naval yard in Washington D.C. and in a flight training program in Florida before being honorably discharged in April 1948. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy but chose to attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He received his college degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1952.

Augie married his high school sweetheart, Shirley June Rabuck, on September 8, 1951 in New Lisbon, WI. They were blessed with 5 daughters, whom they loved very much. They were married until Shirley’s death on July 18, 2012, enjoying nearly 61 years together.

Augie was a wonderful husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to sing all sorts of songs from his childhood. Family get-togethers usually involved board or card games and jigsaw puzzles. Augie also had a soft spot for animals and the family had several horses, dogs and cats throughout the years.

After graduation, Augie worked for Carrier Air Conditioning & Heating from 1952 until his retirement in 1986. Most of Augie’s career was spent in sales of heavy equipment for large commercial projects. His intellect and leadership skills were invaluable as he progressed in his career. The Drom family moved numerous times as he took on new and more challenging roles at Carrier. They lived in Chicago IL, Minneapolis MN, Peoria IL, St. Louis MO, Dallas TX, Syracuse NY, Naperville IL and finally settled back in Dallas.

After taking early retirement from Carrier in 1986, Augie purchased Jack Sanders Lumber in Jackson Hole, WY with his daughter Connie and son-in-law Harvey McMillan. They changed the name to Builders’ Lumber & Supply and enjoyed a successful business venture until 2003.

Augie and Shirley loved to travel. His idea of a great vacation was to load up the family and head out on a cross-country road trip, camping along the way. He visited every one of the 50 states and traveled to Europe, Canada and Central America. Always busy, Augie was involved in a multitude of projects, including some small business ventures with his children, home remodeling, investing in real estate and the stock market. He was an amazing teacher and mentor to his children as well as his friends and relatives who sought him out for advice.

All will miss him very much.

Augie was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his 5 daughters; Deborah Ann Gant (Dallas, TX), Connie McMillan Von Hagen (Jackson, WY, husband Ron), Patty Drom (Wylie, TX), Carolyn Elizabeth Dornan (Anchorage, AK, husband Grant), and Kathryn (Katie) Balmanno (Lake Oswego, OR, husband Sean); 6 grandchildren Christopher George Gant (Washington DC, wife Christine), Hillary Tyler Gant (Dallas, TX), Jessica Lynne McMillan (Jackson, WY, husband Eric Seymour), Daniel James McMillan (Seattle, WA, wife Mara), Zachary Thomas Dornan (Laramie, WY), and Chelsea Elizabeth Dornan (Santa Monica,s CA); and 3 great-grandchildren Mayumi Raine, Kidlat Keene and Buhawi Forge Gant (Washington DC).

A memorial service will be held on January 20, 2018. The service will begin at 3 p.m. and will take place in Wildwood Chapel at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas Texas. In accordance with their wishes, Augie and Shirley’s ashes will be laid to rest together next to both their parents in New Lisbon and Manitowoc Wisconsin.
