Hulen Samuel Akers, Jr. passed on, not away, on December 26, 2017, one day after Christmas, a season he always loved. After all, he looked like Santa! He was 74 years young and sometimes 74 years old.

Hugh was born on June 25, 1943 to Thelma Fay and Hulen Samuel Akers, Sr. in San Antonio, Texas. At almost 9 pounds and 22 inches, he was born ready to play football.

Hugh is survived by his Special Angel and loving wife, Marilyn, his daughter Julie Meek and husband Larry, son Jamie Akers and wife Becky, and his beloved mother-in-law Mildred Odessa Scheumack. Butch has 6 grandchildren; Ashley Perez Ramos, Ethan Akers, Kevin Meek, Kendra Meek, Kayli Meek, and Zachary Akers and 3 great-grandchildren; Esther, Israel and Daniela Perez, all of whom he loved fiercely and was so very proud of. He is also survived by his sister Gwen Winfree, brother Steve Akers, sister-in-law Danna and Roland Becton, brother-in-law Jay and Karen Scheumack, nieces and nephew; Stephanie, Angie, Robin, Lisa, Susan, Brynna, and Chris, as well as so very many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and dear friends that we are honored and blessed to admit are too many to count or list. Please know that each and every one of you are loved and remembered fondly.

Butch is predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Fay Akers, father-in-law Jesse E Scheumack, and niece Gina Becton.

Hugh graduated from McCallum High School in Austin, TX. He lettered in football in both junior and high school and even played during his elementary years. As the Renaissance man he was, he also square-danced, which is how he met Marilyn, played guitar, and cooked. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Crete, Greece during the Vietnam War era. Upon coming home, Butch married Marilyn and they lived in San Antonio for a short time before moving back to Austin and becoming a member of the Austin Fire Department. Hugh was always a bear of a man (Marilyn started his collection of bears because he used to scratch his back like Baloo the Bear in Jungle Book), was quite intimidating when he wanted to be (usually to rookies and any boy dating his daughter), commanding, strong, dependable, brave and courageous. Reading the comments from his fellow firefighters has been such a pleasure. Marilyn, Julie, and Jamie visited him at the fire station just about every shift he worked and his kids were completely fascinated by the trucks, stations and the other firefighters, especially when they would get a call during one of those visits. They followed him to a fire ONE time… Need I say more? When Julie and Jamie were young, they never worried about him getting hurt because he could do anything in their eyes. He retired from the AFD as a Lieutenant, after 25 years of service. He went on to work for AFD dispatch and Air Shop, then a private air shop and owned his own business.

Butch was a man of many, many talents. He dipped bowling pins; was a mechanic, learning all about cars and engines from his dad; a welder (DO NOT stare at the welding arc without goggles, Jamie Darrell!); BBQ guru; fisherman with Jesse, Roland, Charlie Brown, Frank and Melvin Matthews and just about anyone else who wanted to fish; church board member for many years (he literally helped build Austin Revival Center); hunter; history buff and patriotic American; crossword solver; boat-driver for all the kids at the lake; fixer of any and everything. Butch loved Mexican food, Roland's pizza, firehouse food, Marilyn's (except the whole soybean obsession), Odessa's, and Fay's cooking and desserts. Pecan pie, ice cream, cinnamon rolls with lots of icing, donuts, Wendy's chocolate frosties and peanut butter that he made himself were favorites, but NO COCONUT, please. Julie and Becky spoiled him rotten with sweets every chance they got because life is short, so eat dessert first!!

What a life and legacy. Hugh was not perfect, but he was a Godly man and respected leader and loved the Lord with all his heart. One of his favorite songs was "Jesus Laughing". He had a picture of Jesus laughing in his room. He mentioned he wanted one, so Julie got it for him. You can truly buy anything on Amazon! He is in heaven now and can hear that laughter all the time. Butch loved well and was well loved. He rarely met a person he didn't like or one who did not like him and he has passed that down to Jamie, Ethan, and Kevin. He had the most tender heart and hurt when those he loved hurt. He would hold their hand, give them hugs, or just be with them. At the end, we were so happy with eye contact – he communicated love in many ways. He celebrated accomplishments, big and small, with us all. He would do absolutely anything for his family. He went to games, programs, graduations, birthday parties, and the birth of almost all of his grandkids. He will forever be loved, missed, remembered and live on in our hearts. He was a loving, caring husband and partner, fabulous and respected daddy, amazing grandpa and pop and incredible friend. Our hearts are completely broken, but we know we will see Hugh, Butch, Daddy, and Grandpa/Pop again in heaven. He's there with Jesus, breathing easy and in no pain, with an absolutely clear mind and as happy as can be. Life is a journey of ups and downs, joy and sorrow, trials and celebrations, peace and turbulence, and he reached the end of it. He saw God's power, love, and provision and did his best to live out God's love. Please do your best to be ready and join him in heaven. When you think of and miss Hugh, honor him and the man he was by offering unexpected kindness, generosity, and love. Be a bear of a man or woman with a tender heart.
