James was a graduate of Benton Harbor High School and then attended Lake Michigan College. He was formerly employed at Zenith Corp. and Augusta Air.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 29, at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, where a celebration of life service to honor James’ memory will follow. The Rev. Lonnie Truelove will officiate. Private burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family. James is survived by a daughter, Patty Hankins; a son, Timothy (Tracy) Hankins; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; his mother, Elizabeth Slabaugh; a brother, Joseph (Tammy) Slabaugh; a sister, Caroline (Johnny) Tackitt; and many aunts, uncles, other family members and friends.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Hankins; two brothers, Bill and Mark Hankins; a sister, Royce Duel; an uncle, James Carmichael; and an aunt, Zelda Giliberto.
