Gene was born December 26, 1936 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Richard and Grace (Mathias) Burrous. Right after high school he joined the U.S. Army where he served for twenty years including two tours in Vietnam. Gene received the Bronze Star and many other medals. After retiring from the Army he worked as painting contractor. Gene was the past Commander of VFW Post 99 in Decatur. He enjoyed fishing with his daughter Sherri, hunting, shooting guns at the range, and playing pool. He loved country music and Dallas Cowboys. Gene loved his kids and grandkids and was famous for his backyard barbeques especially chicken. He married Shirley Ann Murray on December 28, 1957. She preceded him death on July 13, 1976. Gene then married Frances Jackson on September 26, 1987. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2013.
Gene is survived by his children Tammera Bryant, Ronnie (Candy) Burrous, Scott (Kristy) Burrous, son-in-law Tom Grimes, grandchildren Heather, Emmitt (Katie), Samantha (Eric), Stephanie, Holly, Aaron, and Jacob, and many great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, siblings, and daughter Sherri Grimes.
Services to celebrate Gene’s life will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial with military honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.
