Vera Mae (Bryan) Morgan entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the age of 86 years old. In 1931, she was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, TN. Vera was one of 12 children born to James Wylie and Bertie Lucille (Fletcher) Bryan. Raised in a large family during the Great Depression, Vera assisted in raising her younger siblings and helped her mother around the house. She was a graduate of Old Knoxville High School and, at 16, started work at the S&W Cafeteria.
Vera went on to travel extensively, attend college, raise two children and retired, not once but several times. She served 31 years with the federal government. Fifteen were with the Directorate of Pastoral Care at the US Air Force's flagship hospital, Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. She was later appointed the hospital's Director of Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services. Wilford Hall was central to Vera's life. She married her husband, John Morgan, in the hospital chapel; met President Jimmy Carter when he toured the facility; saw two of five grandchildren born there; and, said goodbye to her husband.
After 40 years in San Antonio, TX, Vera lived for short periods in Florida, the Washington DC area, and Tennessee before relocating to Manlius, NY where she lived out her later life being cared for by family. She enjoyed photography and loved playing Rook and Bridge, visiting the beach and spending time with family. Vera was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and ALTRUI Ladies Oriental Shrine in San Antonio, TX.
In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Morgan; brother, Melvin Bryan, and sisters, Marjorie "Bobbie" Connor, Jo Frances Bryan, Carolyn Repass, and Martha Leffew. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, siblings other relatives and many friends.
