Bruce Edward Guy, 61, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018. He was being treated for aggressive lymphoma.

He was born May 29, 1956 to Richard and Juanita (Jean) Zimmerman Guy in Traverse City, MI. Bruce and his siblings were raised on a farm in Rapid City, MI. At Kalkaska High School, he played center for the football team and graduated in 1974.

After receiving a degree in Religion from Alma College in 1978 and studying History and Physical Education at CMU, Bruce joined the U.S. Army. At Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX, he received training to operate and repair the Patriot Missile System, then onto Germany and next to Turkey at the start of Desert Storm.

After being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant, Bruce attended grad school at the University of South Florida, where he got a master's degree in Library and Information Science in 1993. While at USF, Bruce met his future bride, Kimberly Ann Heckerling, who also received her masters in the same subject. Bruce and Kim were married Oct. 9, 1994 at the Herlong Mansion in Micanopy, FL. At the time of their marriage, Bruce was already employed by the Branch District Library in Coldwater, MI, as a reference and automation librarian. While at the BDLS, he helped bring high-speed Internet to Branch County. Bruce and Kim welcomed their son, Alexander Thomas Guy, on Feb. 24, 2001.

In the fall of 2002, Bruce was hired as library director for the Gladwin County Library (now Gladwin County District Library). Over the years, he became involved with many organizations and projects throughout Gladwin County. He served on the boards of the Gladwin County Friends of the Library, Gladwin County Genealogical Society, and the Beaverton Activity Center. He was also a member of Rotary, VFW, and American Legion in the county.

A veteran himself, Bruce worked on a project to recognize the service of all of the Gladwin County veterans. He was also interested in preserving Gladwin County history and helping people trace their family histories. Bruce's other interests included playing his guitar and rooting for his favorite sports teams, the Detroit Lions, the Michigan State Spartans, and the USF Bulls.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Kim; his son, Alexander; his father, Richard; his brother, Richard; three sisters, Karen (Gerald) Buning of Bellaire, MI, Rolleen (Tom) Parente of Punta Gorda, FL, and Kathleen (David) Quandt of Afton, MI as well as several aunts and uncles, numerous cousins, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Juanita, and a brother, Kieth.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the Beaverton Activity Center, 106 Tonkin, Beaverton. Cremation has taken place. For those wishing to honor Bruce with a charitable donation, please consider the Soldiers and Sailors Fund at the Gladwin County Courthouse, or any of the organizations to which Bruce belonged.
