Ruth Esther Acheson

Ruth Esther (Chittenden) Acheson was born September 1, 1924 to Elmer Chittenden and Goldie Stotts Chittenden in their home in Aberdeen, Washington.

She passed away in Emmett, Idaho on January 6, 2018. Her siblings are Clarence Chittenden, long time resident of Emmett, Idaho; Kenny Chittenden who lived most of his life in Yerrington, Nevada; and Lela Chittenden McBee who resided for many years in Bremerton, Washington. Ruth soon moved to Nampa, Idaho and attended the Nazarene Academy, and later Northwest Nazarene College. She first met her future husband Vernon Acheson who lived in Emmett, Idaho on a blind date in McCall, Idaho at Victory Cove Campground in 1942. It wasn't until five years later that they met again. They courted mainly by going to revival services in different Nazarene churches in the area. They were married in four months from the "chance meeting" at a revival service in Emmett. Nearly from the beginning of their courtship they would spend the evenings planning their future together. One of the main things that attracted her to Vernon was his reddish hair and the fact that he enjoyed taking her to church. They were married on May 9, 1947 in Nampa, Idaho and made their first home there. Born of this union were four daughters: Sherry Acheson Gardner, Sandra Acheson Plummer, Sylvia Acheson Ross, and Susette Acheson Hoffpauir.Ruth enjoyed singing and playing the piano as a child. She would admit these were her favorite childhood "hobbies." As a young adult, she sang and played guitar with a friend who sang and played the accordion. Together they travelled to different small churches ministering in song. Ruth loved to play board games, first with her husband and good friends Doris and Sonny Lawrence, then later with her grandchildren. There was never a shortage of fun and laughter and always sweet and salty snacks to go with those games. Many good memories were made around her game table. Ruth spent the majority of her married life in McCall, Idaho where she and Vernon raised their four daughters. She was always a stay-at-home mom who was always there for her girls, and welcomed their friends into the home at any and all times. She was known to give "sermonettes" to her girls out of her love and concern for their spiritual well-being, and her grandchildren were not exempt from those sermonettes, either. In fact, her last one given to one of her grandsons was just 6 days before her homegoing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, her brother Clarence and sister Lela, and daughter Sylvia.

She is survived by her brother Kenny, three daughters and three sons-in-law: Sherry and Larry Gardner of Emmett, Idaho; Sandra and Terry Plummer who currently live in Alabama; and her "baby" Susette and husband Terry Hoffpauir of McCall, Idaho; and eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.The family is grateful for the support and care provided by Heart n' Home during the final days.

Viewing will be at the Potter Funeral Chapel from 6-8 pm on Tuesday January 9, 2018, and a graveside service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, January 10th at the Emmett Cemetery.
