OBSEQUIES OF HON. JOHN FOSTER
On yesterday morning the CHRONICLE & SENTINEL, contained a notice of the death of Hon. John Foster, ex-Mayor of the city of Augusta. The funeral obsequies of the deceased took place yesterday afternoon at four o'clock, from his late residence on Bay Street. The funeral procession was very large and imposing, as the friends of the deceased in this city were legion. The pallbearers were eight in number, and six of them were ex-Mayors of the city; one was the present Mayor, and the other the Chief of Police. The following named gentlemen were the pallbearers:
Ex-Mayor John Phinizy, ex-Mayor L.L. Ford, ex-Mayor A.P. Robertson, ex-Mayor W.E. Dearing, ex-Mayor R.H. May, ex-Mayor H.F. Russell, Mayor J.V.H. Allen, and Chief of Police J.A. Christian.
Three other ex-Mayors-Hon. Alfred Cumming, Gen. George W. Evans and Hon. James T. Gardiner were requested to act as pall-bearers, but were prevented from complying on account of their absence from the city.
Among those present were several members of the City Council. The remains were escorted to the cemetery and there deposited, with the customary celebrities, in the family burial place of the deceased.
