GRUNEISEN, CARYL K. SR., 82, died Sunday, February 13, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on September 5, 1928 to Albert H. and Anna Geneva Keely Gruneisen. A 1947 graduate of St. Xavier High School, he retired as treasurer of Hughes Lumber Company. Caryl served in Germany during the Korean conflict and was instrumental in organizing 19 reunions of the 353rd Communication Recon Company. He was a member of American Legion Zachary Taylor Post 180 and St. Barnabas Catholic Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Holzapfel Gruneisen; a son, John Joseph; brothers Albert, Donald and Thomas; and a sister, Joan McCubbin.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, five children, a brother, a sister, sixteen grandchildren, and countless loving nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Barnabas Church, 3042 Hikes Lane, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road. Two prayer services will be held Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. with eulogy.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or Sister Visitor Center.
