British Army Lieutenant General. His military service ran from 1869 until 1918, and during that time he commanded the British Cape Colony and was Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley, and participated in the Second Boer War and World War I. From 1908 until 1912 he served as Quartermaster-General to the British Forces and was Governor of Gibraltar from 1913 until 1919. His awards and honors include the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire, the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour (France), the Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy, and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Spain). He died at the age of 75. A memorial was erected in his honor at St. Peter Church in Yoxford, Suffolk, England.
