The Rev. Daniel E. Carey, 81, chaplain of the Catholic Memorial Home, 2446 Highland Ave., died Thursday at the home.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Andrew and Margaret (Curley) Carey.
Father Carey prepared for the priesthood in St. Charles Seminary, Catonsville, Md., and St. Bernard's Seminary, Rochester, and was ordained in St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River, on May 26, 1934 by the late Bishop James E. Cassidy.
A Catholic priest for 56 years, he served in several churches throughout the Fall River Diocese. Among his assignments were St. Peter's Church of Provincetown, Sacred Heart Church of Taunton, St. James Church of New Bedford, Our Lady of the Isle Church on Nantucket, where he served for 18 years, and was pastor of St. Dominic's Church of Swansea from 1970 to 1980, when he moved to the Catholic Memorial Home where he served as chaplain for several years.
During World War II, Father Carey served as a chaplain in the Army Air Corps.
He leaves a brother, Andrew J. Carey of Honolulu.
