George Dewey Shearer Jr., age 75, died peacefully Thursday morning at his residence in Havelock.

Retiring as a MGySgt, he served 33 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also served 13 years with New Bern's National Cemetery. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men's Club and church softball league. He was also affiliated with Boy Scout Troop 52, Habitat for Humanity, the New Bern chapter of "H.O.G.," Harley Owners Group, and was a volunteer with the Craven County Board of Elections.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday morning at the First United Methodist Church, 324 Miller Blvd. in Havelock, with Rev. Eldrick Davis officiating, followed by interment in the National Cemetery in New Bern.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy "Dot" Elizabeth Shearer; five sons, Shorty Shearer of Carlisle, Pa., Terry Shearer of Raleigh, Robert Shearer of New Bern, Roger Shearer of Kinston, and Matt Shearer of Anchorage, Alaska; and nine grandchildren.

A visitation is planned for Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund c/o First United Methodist Men's Club or to the Havelock unit of the Boys and Girls Club of Coastal Carolina, P.O. Box 1514 Morehead City, N.C. 28557.
