Robert D. Barger Sr.
January 5, 1928 - January 11, 2018

Robert D. Barger Sr., 90, of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 at a local nursing home. Bob just celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 7 with an open house/birthday party at Westwood.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Westlawn Presbyterian Church. A masonic service and military honors will conclude the funeral. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bob was born Jan. 5, 1928 in Sioux City to Victor A. and Mary Elizabeth (Soukup) Barger. He attended Sioux City schools. Just prior to the Korean Conflict he served with the U.S. Army in Korea. On July 3, 1948 he married Delores E. Rosenbaum in Sioux City. She passed away May 15, 2006.

Prior to his time in the Army, Bob started working in the family business. After his discharge he continued at Barger Brothers as a mechanic. Later the business branched out into construction. In 1980, Bob and his son, Bob Jr. bought the business. Grandson Justin joined them in 1996 where they worked together until Bob Sr. retired (at age 80).

Bob was a member of North Riverside Lodge #662 A.F. & A.M. where he served as past worshipful master, the Eastern Star and the Abu Bekr Wrecking Crew. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 319 of North Sioux City.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed working on cars and trucks, woodworking and being a practical joker. He has been a member of Westlawn Church since 1956 where he served on church boards and helped with church maintenance. He was very active in church until multiple myeloma and cancer treatments prevented him from doing so. Bob resided at Westwood Specialty Care in Sioux City where the nurses, aides and entire staff took very good care of him for the last three and a half years.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Janice and Dennis Schempp of Ponca, Neb. and Robert Jr. and Jo Ann Barger of Sioux City; grandchildren, Stacey Schempp, Bradley Schempp, Melissa (Craig) Ruhrer, Kristin (Rollie) Whitsel and Justin (Sarah) Barger; and great-grandchildren, Tiné Schempp, Jessica Wooley, Nate Ruhrer, Abby Whitsel, Aiden Whitsel, Noah Barger, Lacy Barger, Emma Barger and Anna Barger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores; infant son, Donald; three brothers and three sisters.
