His first and middle names were given him in honor of his grandfather, Chapin Howard, patriarch of a large family in Townshend, VT, where he was born and raised. He came to Kansas from Vermont with his mother, Clarina (Howard) Nichols. He was always generally known as "Howard" Carpenter. (His mother had divorced his father, Justin Carpenter, and married George W. Nichols; she was active in the women’s movement, equal rights, temperance and abolition of slavery.)
