George was a farmer and carpenter. He and wife Ann Elizabeth Sandidge were married in Richmond on 23 December 1837. They had at least eight children: Joseph, Ellen, Isabella, George, Samuel, Bettie, James, and an unnamed boy.

After Ann's death, he married Martha Cornelia Stringer on 8 May 1856. They had at least seven children: Mary Stringer, Lilly, Daniel Tazewell, Phoebe, Albert, Wade Hampton and Cornelia Blanche.

He died age 77 of “Apoplexy,” per state records. His grave, near his wife Ann, Ann's mother, and several of his children, is unmarked.
