A woman and her young son were killed in a car crash Wednesday in Bedford County, authorities said.
The single-car wreck took place about 12:20 p.m. on Virginia 24 just west of Virginia 635, between Vinton and Stewartsville, said Sgt. Bob Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police.
Melisa F. Abshire, 30, of Goodview was driving a red Ford Mustang when she apparently ran off the right side of the road. Abshire overcorrected, crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and hit two trees, Carpentieri said.
Abshire and her 9-year-old son, Jack E. Sheets III, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jack suffered severe injuries last year when he was hit by a car in Roanoke, Carpentieri said the family told state police Wednesday.
The boy was struck by a vehicle in June while crossing Wise Avenue Southeast. The impact sent Jack crashing through the back windshield of a parked car, his family said in June.
Mother and son were wearing their seat belts, Carpentieri said.
