Vivian Lewis Darden, 85, died Jan. 30, 2007, in Newport News.

Born in Pitt County, North Carolina, she was a resident of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County for more than 65 years. She was the daughter of the late John Redden and Ellen Yelverton Lewis of Pitt County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonidas Seward Darden of Isle of Wight County and by seven brothers and sisters.

Blessed with boundless energy and compassion, she was committed to her family, friends and neighbors. She never met a stranger and was there to lend a hand to those in need, providing care for those in the community in many ways. She was active in church and community organizations. She was a faithful member of Uzzell's United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities.

In her later years, she was an active volunteer with Historic St. Luke's, the Isle of Wight Museum, Christian Outreach Program, the American Cancer Society and various other organizations. She was a member of the Col. William Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and had served as regent. Her family was her priority and she enjoyed serving as its matriarch. Granny Darden took special pleasure in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their friends. She was retired from the law firm of Delk and Barlow as a legal secretary.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Robert J. Hurt of Smithfield, and by her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Seward and Vicki Darden of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Thomas and DeeDee Darden of Smithfield; grandchildren, Ellen Couch, Thomas Darden and Carrie Darden of Smithfield, Michael Darden of Hagerstown, Md., Jeff Darden of Oahu, Hawaii, Jenny Casey of Nicholasville, Ky., Darden Hurt of Newport News and Robert Hurt of Oakton, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Couch, Hailey Couch, Chip Darden, Lilly Darden, Chloe Darden, Carlee Darden and Jack Hurt; sisters, Mary Smith of Asheville, N.C., Etna Lewis of Farmville, N.C., and Frances Rouse of Jacksonville, N.C.; and brother, Alfred Lewis of Farmville.

A life celebration service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland United Methodist Church Cemetery, Windsor, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Uzzell's United Methodist Church, Uzzell's Church Road, Smithfield, VA 23430; the Isle of Wight Museum Foundation, 103 Main St., Smithfield, VA 23430; Historic St. Luke's, P.O.
