Bernard H. Bailey, 74, of Kenna passed away Monday, January 22, 2018, at his home away from home, Double B Stables in Kenna. He passed peacefully in the presence of his beloved horses- Angel, Gen, Rock, Berry, Smoke, Encore, and Princess.

Bernard was born November 10, 1943 in Kenna, the son of the Late Luther and Alma Bailey. He was preceded in death by his special aunt, Elva Fisher; his sisters Wanda Wedge and Shirley Bailey.

He was a heavy equipment operator with Charleston Construction for 21 years and retired from Highway Paving in 1996 with 10 years of service. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 132 for 50 years.

Bernard was a Christian and member of Goldtown Community Church.

Bernard had a passion for horses and was well known for his love of speed, pacing, and racking horses. He showed speed horses for over 45 years and received numerous awards in the tri-state area. In recent years he owned, trained, and exhibited walking and racking horses. He passed his love of horses down to his daughters and granddaughters and you could always find “Poppy” at the show coaching and cheering them on. He was a member of the Jackson County Horse Club, Appalachian Walking & Racking Horse Association. When he wasn’t at a horse show, you could find him at a softball or baseball field watching his grandchildren.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra (Stover); his daughters Carla Parsons (Gary) and Mitzi Bumpus (Chuck) of Kenna; grandchildren Bailey Parsons, Delaney Parsons, Jared Bumpus and Jahlea Bumpus. He is also survived by one sister, Jewell Harter of Ravenswood; niece, Krista Rollins (Wade) of Letart, and great-niece Rachel Rollins of Letart.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 26, at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Al Mendez officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bernard’s memory to the Appalachian Walking and Racking Horse Association, P.O.
