The Rev. Eugene Avery Adams, Sr. Negro leader in civic, religious and educational affairs, died Monday at the Good Samaritan - Waverly Hospital. He was born in Cokesbury and was a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte N.C. and Payne Theological Seminary of Wilberforce University, Ohio.

At the time of his retirement and death, he was serving as Chairman of the Board of Victory Savings Bank and as treasurer of Allen University.

He began his career as a pastor in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and later held pastorates in Clinton and Columbia. While serving in Clinton he founded Bell Street High School.

He later served as dean of Kittrell College, Kittrell N.C. and as Dean of Dickerson Theological Seminary of Allen University

During his 45 years in Columbia, he also served as president of the Victory Savings Bank; as chairman of the state-wide Citizens Committee which advocated voting rights and equalization of teacher pay; as president of the Columbia branch of the NAACP; as chairman of the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital; and as a trustee of Allen University and Wilberforce University.

Funeral will be held at the Bethel A.M.E. Church Friday at 1 p.m. Johnson's Funeral Home is in charge.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Stanley A. Earley of Dayton, Ohio and Miss Lucy Rose Adams of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sons, Eugene Avery Adams, Jr. of Washington D.C. and the Rev John Hurst Adams of Seattle, Wash.; and two sisters, Mrs. Lilla Williams of Greenwood and Mrs. Japan Watts of Manassas, Va.
