He was the son of Garrett Ashman and Aileen (Ferges) Ashman.
Beginning in 1954, Gary served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He married Lois June Graff December 18, 1954, in Corinth, Mississippi.
Gary joined the Illinois State Police February 24, 1963. He served as a trooper in District 13. He retired December 31, 1988 as a Special Agent with the Department of Law Enforcement, Division of Criminal Investigations.
Following his retirement, he served as a Bailiff at the Jackson County Courthouse, Murphysboro. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Murphysboro.
Gary liked to fish and go to the shooting range. He enjoyed nature and bird watching. He especially loved to garden.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Valerie (Michael) Schlosser of Lincolnshire; three granddaughters, Laura Schlosser of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sarah Schlosser of Lincolnshire, and Julia Schlosser of Miami, Florida; his brother, Tom Ashman of Lake of Egypt and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Burial: Murdale Gardens of Memory. Military services conducted by the Paul Stout American Legion Post #127.
