Rev. William J. Biffar, C.Ss.R. died at the St. John Newman residence in Saratoga Springs, NY on Tuesday, February 27, 2007. He was 87. Born on October 17, 1919, in College Point, NY. He was a son of the late Dr. Harry and Catherine(Lannigan)Biffar. He attended St. Fidelis parochial school and professed his vows as a Redemptorist on Aug. 2, 1942 at St. Mary's Seminary in MD. He was ordained into the priesthood on June 22, 1947, at Mt. St. Alphonsus Seminary in Espous, NY. He was assigned to the vice-province of Campo Grande, Brazil, from 1948-1952 and later served in the vice province of Richmond. Father served as a Commander in the U.S. Navy and was a Catholic chaplain from 1952 to 1973. Twenty Marines, under his leadership, volunteered to renovate the chapel of Father Damien at the leper settlement, on the Island of Molaki, Hawaii. Also, while stationed in Oahu, he was caught in a tidal wave and injured during duty, requiring hospitalization for several months. He has served at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Syrmna Beach, FL until 1997., when his health began to decline. He has resided in Saratoga Springs since. He was well known by his love, generosity and sense of humor. Survivors include two brothers, Harry Biffar of Fort Myers, FL, Rev. John Biffar SSCC, a missionary priest in Milto, Japan, two sisters, Dr. Ada Ryan of Tuscon, AZ, and Joan Autry of La Palma, CA. Nieces and nephews in the Fort Myers area are Irene Biffar,(Lcdr, USN, Ret.), Sally Humbert, Julia and John E. Biffar. Great niece and nephews in the area are Renee Humbert, Dr. Edward Humbert, Joseph, John M., Sean, Scott, and David Biffar.
