Ray C. Carter, 87, of Salem son of the late Meredith C. Carter and Mary Emma Goodwin Carter, was born June 22, 1917, in Salem. He died Jan. 14, 2005, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem.

He was married to Thelma Riggs Aug. 10, 1938 in Ash Flat. To this union two sons were born. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was an insurance agent, retiring in 1988 after many years. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Salem VFW and American Legion and the Salem Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Riggs of the family home in Salem; two sons and wives; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers Ira and Cephes Carter; three sisters Della Pomeroy, Beulah Sanders and Faye Carter Hall; four half-brothers and sisters Mage Carter, Lilly Roby, Bertha Floyd and Martha Carter; and his father and mother.

The funeral was Jan. 17, at Salem United Methodist Church with burial in Salem Cemetery under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem. Memorials may be made to the Salem Methodist Church building fund or the Salem Cemetery fund.
