Fred McDonald Starr Sr. was born on 16 Nov 1879, a Sunday, in Bainbridge, Putnam Co., IN, the first of two children born to George Washington Starr and his wife, Julia Ann Springer. His father had served a double enlistment in the Union Army during the Civil War.

On 22 April 1898, U.S. President McKinley calls for 125,000 volunteers to join the National Guard of the United States, while Congress authorizes an increase in regular Army forces to 65,000. The U.S. Army is small (2,143 officers and 26,040 soldiers), ill-trained, and ill-equipped. The U.S. Navy, on the other hand, is modern and well-trained, well-repaired, and well-supplied. The on 25 Apr 1898, the U.S. Congress declares that a state of war between the U.S. and Spain has existed since 21 April 1898.

Fred McDonald Starr, in response to the President’s request, enlisted in 26 Apr 1898, as a Pvt , Co. I, 159th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was soon promoted to Cpl. What action Fred may or may not have seen in unknown. He was mustered out on 23 Nov 1898.

Then in 1899 he enrolled in DePauw University, where he joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity when a sophomore and the Yearbook Athletic Editor and graduated in 1902 with a degree in education.

On 3 Jun 1905, Fred was a single school teacher living at 703 3rd Ave. Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY when he applied for a Passport, which listed his description as “Age 25 years old, 5’7” in height, narrow forehead, brown eyes, medium nose, medium mouth, medium chin, brown hair, and dark complexion.” Whether he actually ever used the Passport is unknown. His occupation at that time was “school teacher.”

In 1908 Fred married Mabel Harvey of Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, and on 19 Aug 1909 their only child Fred McDonald Starr Jr. was born.

28 Apr 1910 finds Fred and Mabel living 415 S. Darling St., Angola Ward 2, Steuben Co., IN. Fred’s occupation is now “College Professor” at the Tri-State College (now University) in Angola.

At age 38, he register for the World War I draft on 12 Sep 1918 and he was described as, “medium height, slender build, brown eyes, and having brown hair.” He and his family were living at S. Wayne Ave, Angola, Steuben Co., IN.

Two years later, on 12 Feb 1920, Fred and his family still lived in Angola, Steuben Co., IN and Fred still taught at the Tri-State College.

By 12 Apr 1930, Fred and Mabel had moved to 1194 Logan St., Noblesville, Hamilton Co., IN, where he now held the position of Super intent of Public Schools for Noblesville. Which was probably the apex of his career.

In 1935 the family was living Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN and on 15 Apr 1940, Fred and Mildred lived at 405 E. Washington St, Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN, where his occupation is recorded as “School Teacher.”

At age 52, in 1942, he registered for the World War II draft which recorded a description of “5’ 5 1/2”, 120 lbs, hazel eyes, gray hair, and light complexion.” He and Mable still are living in Noblesville, but his occupation is shown as “self-employed,” so it is unclear where he had retired from teaching, or just decided to pursue a more lucrative career.

By 1963 Fred, now retired, and Mabel lived at 106 Taylor PL, in Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN. Sometime during 1963 he was put in the Carver Nursing Home in Greencastle, suffering from malnutrition and generalized arteriosclerosis. It was from these conditions he passed on 30 Jun 1963. Fred McDonald Starr Sr., age 83, was laid to rest in Hope Cemetery, Galesburg, Knox Co., IL, with a military headstone recognizing his service in the Spanish American War.
