Kenneth J. Wallander, age 79, of Cato, died Wednesday morning, January 31, 2018 at Manitowoc Health & Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on May 10, 1938, in Manitowoc, son of the late Raymond C. & Clara (Vesely) Wallander. Ken was a graduate of Valders High School, Class of 1956. He worked construction for a number of years until 1969, where he served a plumbing apprenticeship and attended Lakeshore Technical College to learn the plumbing trade. Five years later, he received his Journeymen's Plumbing License and then continued his education in plumbing for a year and a half later to attain his Master Plumber's License. On August 13, 1960 he married the former Charlotte Felten at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. Ken & Charlotte owned and operated Wallander Plumbing and Heating for 42 years. Ken became a member of the Collins Lions Club in 1980 and was voted club president from 1987 until 1988. In 1993 he became Zone Chairman until 1995 and then from 1996 until 1999. From 1995 to 1996, Ken was Region Chairman. In 1999, Ken was voted as Foundation Director and held office until 2005. He was then nominated as District Governor of District 27B1 in Wisconsin from 2006 until 2007. During his directorship, he chaired the Lions Camp Property Committee for four years and sat on the New Dining Hall Ad-hoc Committee. He has also helped with numerous Lions and volunteer projects and events. Ken was currently serving as a member of the Manitowoc Lions Club. He also served as the town supervisor of Cato for 20 years. Ken served on the Board of Directors of the Viking Bow & Gun Club, helping build their club house with an indoor archery range. He was the recipient of the Elks Lakeshore Hall of Fame and the Valders Athletic Association Achievement Award as a charter member. He was also a charter member of the Clarks Mills Athletic Club and the Valders Athletic Association where he served as an officer on the Board of Directors. Ken was also a youth tournament organizer of "Little Hoopers" basketball and was instrumental in founding the youth girls basketball program of St. Mary's Parochial Grade School, Clarks Mills. He also was the coach of the girls basketball team for St. Mary's. Ken also coached boys baseball in the Pee Wee's, Pony's and Colt's leagues for Clarks Mills and Reedsville. He was also a member of the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame and served on their executive committee.
Survivors include his wife: Charlotte, Cato; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Vicky & Tim Wenzel, New London, Kim & special friend Gail, Kiel, Carrie & Russ Zipperer, Cato; one son and daughter-in-law: Brian & Kelly Wallander, Wadsworth, IL.; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law: Donald & Elizabeth (Betty) Wallander, Two Rivers; one sister and brother-in-law: Diane & Henry B ehnke, Manitowoc; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Richard (Dick) & Jane Felten, Sheboygan; and two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Carolyn Scherrer, Switzerland, and Elaine & Lorten Berchem, Sheboygan. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters-in-law: John & Pam Wallander, Raymond & Ellie Wallander, Al Wallander; one sister: Janet Wallander; and two nephews: Greg Wallander and Mark Haupt.
Cremation has occurred at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc. Funeral Services will be held. Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen.
Ken enjoyed watching sports, especially when his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participated. He was always lending a helping hand in the community, be it church or family, being Mr. Fix It. In his spare time, he especially enjoyed going to Lions Camp to pitch in with a helping hand.
