141ST NEW YORK INFANTRY COMPANY G
18TH VOLUNTEER RESERVE CORPS COMPANY G

Samuel was the son of Jonathan M. and Rhoda Reynolds Ackley. His parents had come to Medina County from New York about 1840 and lived there until about 1856 when they moved to Michigan. Locating on a farm near Blissfield, they remained there until their deaths, the father in the fall of 1881 and the mother in February 1891. There were seven children in the family: Joseph, Susan, Conrad, Gilbert, Charles, and Jonathan.

Samuel was a farmer. He first married Fannie Punches about 1851 in New York but she died while he was in the service. There were four children born to them: Charles (1853), James (1856), Charlotte (1858) and Fidelia (1860). James and Charlotte were born in Ohio and Charles and Fidelia were born in New York. Samuel had come to Ohio with his parents but then returned to New York. He served in the 141st New York regiment of the Union Army during the war. He then returned to Ohio possibly spurred on by the death of his wife.

He married widow Sarah Lee Crom in 1865 who had lost her husband, John, in the war. With Sarah, he had Edith Jane(1867), Charles(1868-1869), Frank Lesley (1870), Elnora Luella(1872-1891), Alice(1874), Anna Winifred(1875-1935), Darwin (1877), and Danone (1878). In addition there were Sarah's sons: George William Crom and Eddie Lee Crom. Following Sarah's death in April of 1881, he married Phoebe Lee on 21 June 1881 in Wood County. They moved to Lenawee County a short time later and located on a farm near Blissfield where Samuel's parents had lived. They had Elza(1883-1971),Grace(1890-1996), and Mabel(1894-1895).

Samuel died in Deerfield but was sent to Blissfield for burial. (He is probably in one of the four cemeteries near there) Frank L. Ackley signed the record. His wife, Phoebe, received his veteran's benefits in May of 1914. She died 20 November 1929.
