Rachel died in 1815 and her husband died 23 months later in 1817.
Rachel brother-in-law, William Campbell (the husband of Rachel's sister, Deborah McRee Campbell), was guardian for the two sons after their father's death.
The younger son died at age 11 in 1825 and his brother died at age 24 in 1832 having never married and started a family.

Will of James LaFayette, probated in Mecklenburg County NC in 1825, left his estate to uncles William Campbell (who had served as his guardian) and James Polk McRee, Aunt Margaret Spratt and several cousins including Jane C. Campbell, Mary M. Campbell, Harriet Campbell Yates, William J. Campbell, John D. Campbell, Andrew M. Campbell, Margaret Campbell Walker and Robert M.Campbell. All of these Campbell cousins were the children of his aunt, Deborah McRee Campbell and his uncle, William Campbell, who had served as his guardian. Additional cousins listed as heirs in James' Will were Robert R. Taylor and John D. Smith. His land is described in the Will as being "his plantation on the banks of Steele Creek". Rachel was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church for her entire life. Many of her family were members there and are buried there also.
