Virginia Caldwell Hibbs passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the Rogue Valley Manor. She was born October 19, 1919 in Ferndale, New Jersey (delivered by a doctor by the name of Stork) to Laura Kennedy Moffett and Walter Clayton Moffett. Her family moved often as a result of her father’s ministerial position. Part of her early life was spent in Canada. The family eventually settled in Baltimore, Maryland where she attended the University of Maryland and the Maryland Institute of Art.

Virginia and Andrew Fletcher Jr. were married December 19, 1941 and in 1944 they had a son, Andrew “Drew” Fletcher III. They were divorced in 1953. Virginia and her son Drew moved to Sarasota, Florida, where they lived for two years. During that time, she attended the Farnsworth Art School and studied portrait painting. Their next move was to Scottsdale, Arizona, and soon after she and the author, Erskine Caldwell were married January 1, 1957 and as a honeymoon traveled for a month in Europe visiting his publishers. Erskine called her his Editorial Assistant and Office Manager. As an artist, Virginia illustrated two of his books. For five years they lived in San Francisco where both Virginia’s son Drew and Erskine’s son Jay (both age 13 at the time) were also household members. Erskine died at their home in Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1987. Several years later, Virginia moved to Medford, Oregon to be near her son Drew and his family who lived in Ashland, Ore. In 1991, Virginia moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford and in 1991 married Dr. Ralph Hibbs, a retired internist who had been a P.O.W. in the Philippines during World War II. She and Dr. Hibbs traveled extensively, did medical missions in various countries, played golf and tennis, and generally led an active life. Ralph died in 2000.

In Medford, Virgina belonged to the Colony Club, the Contemporary Book Club, and the Rogue Valley Country Club.
