Artis Leonard Thompson Sr.

HITCHCOCK—Mr. Artis Leonard "Art" Thompson, Sr., passed from this life Monday afternoon, February 12, 2018, in Texas City.

Born May 20, 1929 in Anacortes, Washington, Mr. Thompson had been a resident of Hitchcock since 1956. Artis helped build First Baptist Church in Hitchcock, where he was a senior adult ministry leader. He was on the Family Welfare Board in Hitchcock, a Boy Scout leader, board member of HIS Ministries and member of the Samish Tribe in Washington. He enjoyed fishing, bar-b-queing and started an annual bar-b-que after he retired from Santa Fe Railroad after 43 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Chester and Mildred Alene (Volz) Thompson; brothers, Earnest Thompson and Donald Thompson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Patricia Thompson; sons, Artis Leonard "Skip" Thompson, Jr., and wife, Barbara of Falls Church, Virginia, Timothy Donald Thompson of Hitchcock; daughters, Evelyn Arlene Thompson and partner, Rebekah Lavender of Bluefield, West Virginia, Holly Carol and Kevin Folsom of Hendersonville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Wanda Christine Niekirk and husband, Griff, Samantha Ann Nuzum; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Hitchcock, 6601 FM 2004, Hitchcock, Texas 77563, with Pastor Lee Balinas and Reverend Mark Neeley officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Folsom, Allen Ivy, Tom Ivy, Skip Thompson, James Pritchett, Kenny Owens and Bill Haygood.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.

Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Art's name to First Baptist Church of Hitchcock, 6601 FM 2004, Hitchcock, Texas 77563.
