Duane E. Alger, Jr.., 64, of Auburn, died Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, following an illness.

He leaves his beloved wife of 28 years, Donna M. (Lanciault) Alger; his children, Jacqueline M. Farmer and her husband David “Chip” of Colorado and Jeffrey Alger of Colorado, Beth A. Kline and her husband David of Rutland, Lisa M. Byczko and her husband Peter of Auburn and Kevin Gabrielian and his wife Michelle of Auburn; his mother, Elsa (Lloyd) Metz of Cape Cod; his five brothers, John, Jeffrey, Kevin, Mark and Timothy; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Duane E. Alger, Sr. Duane was born in Greenfield, and later moved to the Blackstone Valley. He graduated from Hopedale High School, and then attended Northeastern University to study culinary arts. Duane was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam for a tour before being injured. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, and the Cross of Gallantry . Duane then returned to Worcester where he worked as a sheet rocker for several years before joining the College of the Holy Cross grounds department until he retired due to a disability. Duane was very active in veterans groups, and was a member and past commander of the Disabled American Veteran Chapter 4 in Worcester; a former member of the Chester P. Tuttle Post American Legion, a member of the Central Mass Vietnam Veterans group and the Screaming Eagles Association of the 101st Airborne.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, August 23rd from 5-8 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be held on Friday August 24th from the funeral home with a Mass celebrated at 9:30 AM in Saint Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street, Auburn. Burial with Military Honors will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. The family would like to extend their gratitude and heartfelt thank you to the caring and compassionate staff that cared for Duane during his illness at the Memorial Hospital Critical Care Unit, as well as Dr. Alfred and Dr. Savitt.
