Sumya Sofia Adwon fell asleep and went to be with the Lord on February 13, 2018. She was born January 23, 1931 in Kingston, Jamaica, W.I. to Abdullah and Marie Sleem.
She graduated from Alpha Academy in Kingston and started her career in Sales. In August of 1955 she came to Oklahoma City to visit her brother and then met the love of her life, Edward. After a whirlwind courtship they were married in October 28, 1955. Since Sumya was in the States on a visitor's visa, after only 3 months of married life, she had to return to Jamaica to enter the country again as a legal immigrant. She gained citizenship in 1959 when she declared that now she could say anything she wanted to.
Edward and Sumya resumed married life where Edward was pursuing his studies at the University of Oklahoma. Sumya helped by working in the family business. Upon Edward's graduation for the OU Law School they moved to Washington, DC. After returning to Oklahoma City, their first son, Cole, was born in 1963 followed by William in 1965. Sumya was a devoted wife and mother.
Edward by this time had joined Conoco Oil Company and his career took the family to Ponca City, Houston, Westport CT, Dubai and London where Sumya gave the family stability that was needed for a happy family life. In 1995, Edward retired from Conoco and they moved to Norman where they bought the International Pantry. Sumya worked in the business but her passion was traveling with friends and family. She also was a founding member of Holy Ascension Orthodox Christian Church.
Sumya is survived by her husband, sister Syrianno, brothers, Raymond and his wife Myrna, and Elias, nephews, George Karam and wife Susan, Michael Sleem and wife Jill, Patrick Sleem and wife Regina, nieces Michelle Manning, Ingrid Walton and Charlene Sleem.
She was preceded in death by sons, Cole and William, brothers Iser, Albert, Victor and Maurice.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday followed by Interment at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Services under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Avenue, Norman, Oklahoma.
