Candis Viola DuBose Smith, 92, of Frederick, Maryland passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018, at Homewood at Crumland Farms with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late George Hamilton Smith, Jr. for 43 years.

Born on April 5, 1925, in Anson, TX, she was the daughter of the late John and Candis (Sims) DuBose. Candis is survived by her two children, Sharon Kaye Smith and Brent Hamilton Smith (Tina Shriver); nieces Beverly Shoemaker and Francis Harrison (Jimmy); and nephews Donald DuBose (Sarah), Bill Martin (Kay), Gerald Martin (Nancy), and Thomas Moss (Terry). She was preceded in death by her siblings Samuel E. DuBose, M. Beatrice Young, J. Lonnie DuBose, F. Veaudell Moss, Freeda E. Martin, Brownie Lee Blanton, and John M. (J.M.) DuBose, Jr.; and her niece Paula Martin.

Candis began her college education at age 16, leaving home to attend West Texas State University. She graduated from Shepherd College with a B. A. degree in Elementary Education, where she was recognized with the highest academic award, McMurran Scholar, and from Hood College with an M. A. degree. She was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma. Her teaching career began at age 18 when she was recruited to teach eighth grade in her home state of Texas. She began teaching in Frederick County in 1947 and continued teaching in the Frederick County Public School system until her retirement.

Candis was a person of strong faith and committed to service. She was a long-time active member of First Baptist Church, Frederick, MD.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opposumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 19 at the funeral home. Following a brief reception at the funeral home, interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: First Baptist Church, 7040 Bowers Rd., Frederick, MD 21702 or Homewood at Crumland Farms Benevolent Fund, 7407 Willow Rd., Frederick, MD 21702.
