Robert S. Hyde, 80, retired chairman of the Lyndhurst-based Mattlin-Hyde Piano Co., died Friday, August 24, 2001, at his Toledo home that he shared for fifteen years with his Friend of the Heart, Beth McCray. He began working in the piano business with his father, founder of the Hyde Piano Co. of Cleveland, in the late 1940's. He took over the operation of the piano and organ store at Euclid Ave. and E. 21st St. in 1957. In 1969, Hyde Piano merged with its competitor across the street, Mattlin Piano. "We did it on a handshake," said Hyde's partner, Bill Mattlin. "Bob Hyde was like my brother." Two years later, they opened a branch in Lyndhurst, which became their main store after they closed the downtown showroom in 1972. Hyde ran the company's outlets in the western suburbs, first in Parma Heights and later in Brooklyn. The company was sold and became a division of Steinway Hall in 1996.
Hyde was born in Cleveland but graduated from high school in Bethlehem, PA. In 1940, he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard. His unit, which became part of the 73rd antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, soon was activated for regular Army service. During World War II, Hyde served in North Africa and Europe. He participated in the Allied invasion of Italy at Salerno. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars, and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. Bob had been a member of the Cleveland area Roosevelt Blue Lodge, Thatcher Chapter, Oriental Commander, Al Koran Shrine. At one time, Hyde was a certified flight instructor. Among his other interests were boating, skiing, golf, tennis and karate.
Surviving are his wife, Grace; daughters, Patricia Nichol and Cherie Klimas, both of Westlake, Carol Janik of Bay Village and Judy of Lakewood; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Special children Chris (Jennifer) McCray and Kathy McCray.
