As a boy in 1860, John had lived in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas with his parents. But according to the 1870 census, by which time John had married Maria, he was a grocer in the nearby town of Marianna, Arkansas, which at that time was in Phillips County but in 1873 was incorporated into Lee County. They still were living there in 1880, three years prior to his death, and Maria continued to live there until her death in 1912.
