EMIGRATION: From England to USA in ship "Horizon", LDS Church Office Bldg Historian's Office, Emigration Record of Liverpool Office of the British Mission for 1855-1863, p 170 lists:

Franklin D. Richards agent for the ship Horizon which sailed 4 May 1856 and arrived New York 14 Jun 1856. 836 people (108 children) listed on the passenger lists:

John Rodwell, 55, carpenter, address End Clayton near Bradford, Chapman Place, Crisp St., Poplar, London, $1,800; Sarah Rodwell, 49, wife.

Samuel Read, 48, clerk, address 2 Hawthorn Place, West India Road, London, total paid for family $5,400; Elizabeth Read, 50 wife; Elitha (Alicia) Read, 15, spinster; Samuel Read, 14; Frisbea (Thisbe) Read, 9; Walter, Read, 6.

John and Sarah Rodwell traveled with the Martin Handcart Company. Walter Read became lost from the company. Georgina, Alicia & Thisbe traveled on with the company while Samuel Milford and Samuel George went back to Councils Bluff to locate the boy. They hoped to locate Walter quickly and catch up with the group. The Read women trudged painfully without their men but surely John and Sarah were of great assistance being fellow Saints and family friends.

One occasion on the plains Josiah Rogerson records a dream account orally given by John Rodwell:

"Praying is something that we do more often now, too. In our tents with our families we gather more frequently. At prayer times it seems that the prayers are more unwavering, more devoted, more from the depths of one's heart. I know mine are.

At prayer meeting tonight, a very fascinating and wonderful incident, happened! I have heard of it before, but I have never seen it happen. Brother Rodwell stood up after prayers and started to speak in a language that I did not understand. I wondered if he had been on a mission somewhere where they spoke that language, but Louisa whispered "No, he has not been on a mission! He is speaking in tongues!" We were shushed of course by those near us.

Then the most wonderful thing happened. The interpretation was given that "Rescuers will be with us within three days. Deliverance is on the way!" Can it be believed? Oh, how wonderful! In three days we will have help! After that we sang "The Spirit God Like a Fire is Burning," with more enthusiasm than we have had in quite a long while."

After Elizabeth Georgina Quilley & Samuel George Read separated as husband and wife, Georgina became the second wife of John Rodwell. The Rodwell's resided in Nephi where John was engaged in making saddles. John had been a cordwainer from England.
