Sylvia and Pete moved to Milwaukee following their marriage, and later built their home on Sherman Road in Jackson. It was here that they raised their two daughters, Chris and Pam. In 1970, Sylvia returned to school to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1974 with a Bachelor degree in Nursing, and from UW-Oshkosh in 1979 with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
Sylvia lived her life lovingly dedicated to helping and serving others. Professionally, she assisted Dr James Albrecht in starting the Albrecht Free Clinic in West Bend. She served on the board of the Samaritan Home, taught briefly at Moraine Park Technical College, and spent many fulfilling years as the supervisor of the Intensive Care Unit at Hartford Hospital - retiring from there at the age of 79. Personally, she was a wonderful mom, grandma, friend, helper and caregiver to anyone who needed a hand, a house call, or simply a listening ear.
Pete and Sylvia’s home was always filled with activity - including Sunday swimming and volleyball get-togethers, Saturday night card club parties, short or long term lodging for those that needed a place to stay, and at least one, if not two Boston Terrier puppies. Sylvia loved her Boston Terriers!! Sylvia was also an avid gardener, seamstress, and antique refinisher. She was a long time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Jackson, WI, and later St. Luke’s Church in Slinger, WI.
Sylvia was a loving mom and mother-in-law, wife to her husband Pete, and grandma to her grandchildren - Jared (Stephanie) Wiedmeyer, Carin (John) Groh, and Jenna (Cody) Garvin. She was also a very excited great-grandma to be, anxiously awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild, a boy, to Jared and Stephanie, due in March 2018.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Pam and Warren Wiedmeyer, her three grandchildren, Jared (Stephanie) Wiedmeyer of Westminster, CO, Carin (John) Groh of Denver, CO, and Jenna (Cody) Garvin of Green Bay, WI; her sister-in-laws Lois Sunstrom (Maplewood WI), Dorothy Cihlar (Sturgeon Bay WI) and Carolle Cihlar (Sturgeon Bay WI). In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Peter, her daughter Christine and son-in-law Frederick Rippy, her brother Curtis Sunstrom, her nephew Philip Sunstrom, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Friends may gather at Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend WI, on Saturday, February 24th, from 10 am. until the time of service at noon, with pastor George Lessmann officiating. Sylvia will be buried at Zion Methodist Cemetery in Denmark, WI alongside her husband and daughter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albrecht Free Clinic in West Bend WI or the Washington County Humane Society, in honor of Sylvia’s love for people and pets.
Special thanks go out to Sylvia’s caregivers at Jackson Crossings Retirement Center, and most recently, the entire staff and caregivers at Serenity Villa and Horizon Hospice. The love and compassion you showed Sylvia was such a blessing. It was as if God sent his angels to care for her in her final days on earth.
