Death Takes Ex-Printer

James D. Abbott, 88, who was prominent in the printing industry in Portland over a period of 50 years, died Monday morning at his home near Depoe Bay.

Mr. Abbott served in the House of Representatives of the Oregon State Legislature during the 1909, 1911 and 1913 sessions and was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. He also was active in many civic affairs.

He was president of the printing firm of James, Kerns, and Abbott Co., now Abbott, Kerns & Bell Co. He learned the printing trade on the Vancouver (Wash.) Columbian and worked at the trade for The Oregonian, the Oregon Journal and the Portland Telegram before entering private business in the firm of Mann & Abbott.

Mr. Abbott was born June 24, 1875, in Linn County and served with Battery "A" of the Oregon National Guard during the Spanish-American War. During his terms in the Legislature he was a supporter of the workmen's compensation law and the Industrial Accident Commission legislation. He also was a sponsor of the teachers' tenure act.

He was long active in the Portland Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Portland Gold Club, and a life member of the Portland Art Association. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Al Kader Temple of the Shrine.

He leaves the widow, Ethel, to whom he was married in 1902; two daughters, Mrs. Alice King and Miss Betsy Abbott; a son, Donald P. Abbott, and one grandson.

Services will be in charge of J. P. Finley & Son.
