Catholic Witness, November, 2001 Women's Memorial features Dbq. nun Farmington Hills, Mich. - Dubuque native Marie Flick, RSM, a Sister of Mercy of the Regional Community of Detroit, has been designated as a registered member of The Women's Memorial in Washington, DC. Her photo and record of service are now part of this first major national memorial to document the experiences of women in military service to America and tell their stories of service, sacrifice and achievment. The Women's Memorial is located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery. Sister Marie served as a director of nursing service in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971 and opened a nursing school with a Vietnamese nurse. She continued service in the following developing countries. Ghana, with Catholic Relief Services, 1972. Fiji and Gilbert Islands, with the Peace Corps, 1973. Yemen, with Catholic Relief Services, 1975. Jamaica, 1979. She also worked among the poor in St. Patrick Parish in Detroit, Mich. She was born on August 19, 1913 to Albert and Mary (Kacel) Flick in Dubuque, Iowa and named Alberta at her baptism in Holy Ghost Church. In 1931, she joined the Sisters of Mercy in Dubuque and received the name, Sister Albert Marie. She professed perpetual vows on August 16, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sister Marie taught primary grades in parochial schools in Bankston, Eagle Center, Independence and Larchwood, Iowa. She became a registered nurse after completing studies at Mercy College of Detroit and earning a bachelor of science degree from Loras College, Dubuque and a master of science degree from the University of Michigan. Her career in health care included serving as a staff nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids and supervising the operating room at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit. Sister Marie taught science at Mercy College of Detroit and was chair of the college's Division of Nursing from 1953 to 1962. She served as chief executive officer of St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing from 1962-1968. Sister Marie served as director of nursing at a Catholic hospital in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971 where she also opened a nursing school with a Vietnamese nurse. She continued service in several developing countries: in 1972, with Catholic Relief Services in Ghana; in 1973, with the Peace Corps in Fiji and the Gilbert Islands; in 1975, with Catholic Relief Services in Yemen; and from 1981 to 1983 in Jamaica with the Sisters of Mercy. She did volunteer secretarial work at St. Patrick's Parish in Detroit for several years before retiring to McAuley Center. In 2001, Sister Marie was designated as a registered member of The Women's Memorial in Washington, D.C., the first major national memorial to document the experiences of women in the military and tell their stories of service, sacrifice and achievement. Sister Marie is also remembered by many of her students and colleagues as an excellent teacher, an energetic leader and a dedicated servant of those who are poor. Throughout her rich and varied career, she was always approachable and concerned for others. Sister Marie is survived by several nieces, a nephew, many friends and the members of her religious community. A welcoming service will be held at McAuley Center on August 4, 2004 at 3 pm with a scripture and remembrance vigil at 7 pm. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in McAuley Center's chapel on August 5, 2004 at 9 am. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Arrangements are under the direction of McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills.
