Son of Ben T Choate & Florence Ryan
Colfax, California resident, Ted Choate, passed away peacefully at home on January 19, 2018 after several years of fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was a kind, sweet, honest man who will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, generosity and willingness to always help others.
In 1946, Ted was born in San Francisco, Calif. After graduating from Balboa High School he joined the US Air Force in 1966. He trained and worked on the Aircraft F-4 Phantom ll at George Air Force base. While he was there he also trained to be a private pilot and got his license.
After his service he went to work with Western Electric Installation in San Francisco and then on to various communications companies in the Bay Area over the years. He installed and worked with voice mail and PBX systems. In 1990 he went to work for Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic in Marin County, Calif. as a telephone and IT tech working on their voice mail and communications systems.
In 2002 he switched careers to teach what he knew at the Coast Guard Training School in Petaluma, Calif. Ted shared his incredible personality and his telephone knowledge with hundreds of Coast Guard technicians as a Premise Distribution instructor. He was also the Master of both the Eon and Nortel telephone systems classes. He loved training the cadet "coasties". After nine years of teaching he retired early to deal with prostate cancer.
His love for the Gold Country inspired him to move with his wife to Colfax six years ago. He volunteered for five years as an AARP Tax representative at the Senior Center in Auburn, Calif. and drove for MY Rides through the Seniors First program taking folks to doctor's appointments. He was also a member of the Colfax Garden Club. Once again he was struck with cancer, this time in the lungs.
With his quick wit and critical thinking skills, Ted enjoyed a good cross word puzzle, Jeopardy, and various board games with friends. He loved camping with family, friends and his dogs. In his youth he loved hunting and camping with his brother and father. He enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica in past bands as well as for his own pleasure. His last performance was at the Dutch Flat Cowboy Poetry and Music fundraiser last April.
He will be dearly missed by his soul mate and loving wife of 14 years, Annette Choate. His brother Ben (Maxine) Choate of Cotati, Calif., his sister Bonnie Barnes of San Anselmo, Calif., and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves stepdaughter Amy (Gary) Garcia of Sonoma, Calif., grandchildren Trey and Jaya, and a stepson Steven (Marina) Gonsalves of Colorado Springs, Colo., and grandchildren Ana and Kate.
We would like to thank the Auburn Faith Hospice program for their professional caregivers, Auburn Infusion center for their wonderful angels disguised as nurses, Dr. Kurtis Fox, Dr. Brian Kim, Dr. David Lindstadt, our friend Dr. Scott Herold and our many friends and neighbors who helped us during this trying time. The people of Placer County have open and warm hearts and he made so many friends.
A celebration of life and luncheon will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Shady Glen Clubhouse at 450 Gladycon Rd. in Colfax. Donations can be made to Rescue For Pet Sake of Grass Valley, Calif., the Colfax Garden Club or Seniors First of Auburn.
