Mr. Howard Chaffon Cashwell, 88, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport. A native of Cumberland County, Howard was the son of Pearl Faircloth Caswell and Howard. He was a US Navy veteran and retired from Carolina Telephone & Telegraph/Centurylink after 40 years of dedicated service. Howard was never one to sit still and was an active member of Clark's United Methodist Church and enjoyed time with his friends on the golf course. He was just recognized as a 60 year Master Mason, where he faithfully served in the Berne Lodge #724 A.F.&A.M. where he was past master. He was also an active Shriner, where he was a regular driver for the Sudan Temple's Roadrunners, taking over 200 trips with children and families to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC. Sadly, Howard was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 48 years, and the mother of his children, Juanita Hubbard Cashwell.

A celebration of Howard's life will be 12:00 PM, Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Clark's United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Register officiating. Masonic Rites will follow. The family will gather in the fellowship hall following the services. Those wishing to offer words of hope and condolences may visit www.pollockbest.com. Howard is survived by his wife of 20 years, Betty Mayer Cashwell, of River Bend; his daughter, Lisa C. Shiver,(Dan Maxheimer); his sons, Gary Cashwell,(Leona); Chris Cashwell,(Judy); along with his three grandchildren, Michael Shivar (Ashley), Crystal Shivar (Henry Taylor), Nikki Cashwell; and his three great-grandchidlren, Madison, Tyler, and Exavier. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Jimmy Abbott, Gail Grandy (Hank), Patty Douglas, and Allyson Venrick; their children, Jimmy Abbott, Joanna Baugh, Trey Grady, Leah, Goethe, and Casey Femrite, and Walker Venrick.
