Heyward Walton Gainey, Sr., age 96, passed away Wednesday, March 07, 2018. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 9th in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born February 6, 1922, Heyward is the son of the late James Noland Gainey and Dale Clark Gainey. He served in the U.S. Army and worked in maintenance for Darlington County for 38 years. Heyward enjoyed gardening, travelling, and working on cars. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Darlington.

Surviving are his wife of 74 years, Betty Watkins Gainey; his son, Heyward “Prune” Gainey, Jr.; his grandchildren, Amy G. Blanks, Katina G. Treadway, Kim G. Eaddy, Larry “Bunky” Gainey, Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Darian Gainey, Ashley Blakenship, Sierra Gainey, and Noelle Harold.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Larry Gainey, James “Jimmie” Gainey, and 8 siblings.
