Byron Bahn "Barney" Strickler, formerly of York, died peacefully at his residence in Country Meadows of Hershey, on March 8, 2018 at age 96, just shy of his 97th birthday of March 18.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; and daughters, Kathleen Haase (Norman) and Susanne Nicol (Colin); four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and Elaine's children, John Stailey, David Christmas, Jim Christmas (Katie), Carolyn Joyner (David) and Elaine's nine grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Mary; brothers, Edward and Richard; and sister, Mary Jane Leader; plus first wife, Kathleen Wentz Strickler; and daughter, Sharon Wentz Strickler.
The Strickler family moved from Williamsport to York when Barney was a child. He graduated from York High School in 1939 and from the York Collegiate Institute in 1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps (predecessor to the U.S. Air Force), serving at Ft Meade, MD and Gowen Field, ID. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in November, 1945 and soon began his career with the Superior Paper Products Company (predecessor of the St. Regis and Georgia Pacific companies), from which he retired after a long career as Sales Manager and General Manager in the Mount Wolf plant.
As a salesman, Barney was able to combine golf and business as a member of the York Golf and Country Club. He was a founding member of Luther Memorial Church in York. His sense of humor was unique.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 11 a.m. in the Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. of Hershey. Visitation will be from 10 - 11 a.m.
Barney's family appreciates the care he received from the staffs of Country Meadows and Grane Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested for Grane Hospice Care, 4 Lemoyne Drive, Suite 201, Lemoyne, PA 17043.
