North Dakota Governor. He served as the 29th Governor of North Dakota from January 1, 1985 to December 15, 1992. He received a degree in philosophy from Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota in 1950. After graduation, he served in the United States Air National Guard from 1951 to 1952. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1962 and served one term before being defeated for re-election in 1966. He was unsuccessful in running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1964. He went on to serve as president of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association Board from 1975 to 1979. He also served on many boards and was a member of various state organizations. In 1984, he ran, as a Democrat, for the governorship of North Dakota against incumbent Republican Governor Allen I. Olson. He was successful in the general election that year and served two terms as governor until stepping down in 1992. During his tenure, North Dakota went through the 1980s farming crisis and celebrated its centennial. After leaving office, he served as Vice President of Public and Government Relations for Crystal Sugar Company in Moorhead, Minnesota. He also remained active at his farming operation near Casselton, North Dakota.
