James "Mac" McDonnell

Manitowoc - James "Mac" McDonnell, age 85 of Manitowoc passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Whitetail Estates, Manitowoc.

Mac was born on April 14, 1932 in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Ida (Backhausen) McDonnell. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated with the class of 1951 from Manitowoc Lincoln High School. He served during the Korean War in the United States Air Force from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956. On May 11, 1968 he married the former Nancy Wilda at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Mac worked for the Manitowoc Parks and Recreation Department for many years until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Mac was Captain of the football team his senior year at Lincoln. He was also a member of the basketball team and went to state for track. He continued to play semi-pro football for the Manitowoc Chiefs after returning home from the military. He enjoyed wood working, card games, going for bicycle rides, walking, and working in the yard. Mac never missed a Packer game. He loved to reminisce about his many trips with Nancy and friends to Venice, Florida and the Dells.

Survivors include Mac's loving wife of 49 years: Nancy McDonnell, Manitowoc; his two sons and their spouses: Jamie (Karen) McDonnell, Manitowoc; Scott (Julie) McDonnell, Manitowoc; four grandchildren: Kaley McDonnell, Milwaukee; Connor McDonnell, Manitowoc; Brianna McDonnell, Manitowoc; Blaine McDonnell, Manitowoc; one sister: Mary Lettenberger, Port Washington; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Jean McDonnell, Manitowoc; Fran McDonnell, Manitowoc Pat (James) Konop, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Ida McDonnell; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ervin and Kathryn Wilda; six brothers and two sisters-in-law: Arnold McDonnell; Pat (Del) McDonnell; Earl (Viola) McDonnell; Kenneth McDonnell; Harold McDonnell; Peter McDonnell; one brother-in-law: Earl Lettenberger.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 12, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc. The Rev. David Pleier and Deacon Alan Boeldt will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial of his cremated remains at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and friends may call or visit the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Military Honors will be accorded by Otto-Oas VFW Post# 659 at the church following mass.
