She lived at Campbell Heights, the estate of her first husband William Grayson Carter. Susan Shelby Carter was mainly responsible for the construction of what became called "Lansdowne Hall". She hired a brick layer and had the bricks made on site by slaves. The house was finally finished in the 1830’s. Her husband Colonel William Carter was a state senator, representing Lewis, Greenup and Lawrence Counties from 1834-1838. Carter County, Kentucky, was named for him. Upon his death from cholera in 1849, Susan Shelby Carter sold the estate to Job Davis and his wife Susan Miller. She then married widower Samuel (a.k.a. Thomas) Magoffin abt. 1855.

Death at Kirkwood of Susan Shelby Magoffin, Daughter of Governor Isaac Shelby.

Mrs. Susan Shelby Magoffin, who has been a resident of St. Louis County for half a century, and was a granddaughter of the famous Governor Isaac Shelby of Kentucky, in which State she was born, died Sunday night at her home in Kirkwood. She was 88 years old.

The funeral will take place today at high noon from Kirkwood to Bellefontaine Cemetery, where the family has a lot. The Reverend Doctor Evans of the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church will conduct the services both in the home and at the cemetery.

The passing of Mrs. Magoffin is the close of a remarkable life. A descendant of some of the finest old stock in Kentucky, where when a man held office, at the time her grandfather was Governor, was to be both socially and otherwise the most exalted man In the State, Mrs. Magoffin, who was then Miss Susan Shelby, was famous for her brilliant intellect and beauty. When she was first introduced to society she became the belle of all the Bluegrass region. After a few seasons as queen at the Governor's mansion, in Lexington, Ky., Miss Shelby was wed to a Mr. Carter. With him she lived happily, until his death, which occurred a few years after their marriage. There were no children out of the union.

Fifty years ago Thomas Magoffin of Missouri was a visitor at Kentucky's capital and woed and won the brilliant widow. Magoffin, a pioneer of St. Louis County, had what in those days was a residence at Barrett's Station and thither he took his bride. They lived there for thirty-five years, when Mr. Magoffin died, and then Mrs. Magoffin, who had no children of her own, moved to Kirkwood. She had in her charge two daughters of Mr. Magoffin by a former wife. These they reared. Miss Susan Magoffin was with her to the day of her death, and Mrs. Jane M. Taylor, the other also lives in Kirkwood.

Susan's obituary indicates her husband as Thomas Magoffin. No records on Thomas Magoffin. Thomas Magoffin is Samuel Magoffin (Thomas Samuel or Samuel Thomas Magoffin).

Samuel Magoffin remarried after the death of his wife Susan Shelby in 1855, the daughter of Isaac Shelby, Jr., and granddaughter of Gov. Issac Shelby, to Susan's cousin, Susan Shelby, the daughter of Gen. James Shelby and Mary Pindell, also a granddaughter of Gov. Isaac Shelby. As the census records indicate, Susan S. (Shelby) Magoffin was living with Samuel Magoffin, as wife, and two step-daughters after their mother had died in 1855. Samuel Magoffin is buried with his first wife, Susan Shelby (1828-1855), as she bore him children, James Wiley Magoffin (christened on 16 Sep 1849, Lexington, Fayette, KY), Jane Magoffin (1851) and Susan Magoffin (1855).
