The death of Charles E. Harrington,
a well-known resident of Manchester,
occurred at the Memorial hospital,
Canandaigua, at 9 o'clock Tuesday
evening, following a long illness.
He had only been in the hospital a
few days and shortly before his death
he had submitted to an operation. He
was 79 years of age.
Mr. Harrington was born on August
30, 1854, at Chapin, a son of the
late Edwin and Catherine Lyman
Harrington, and moved to Manchester
early in life. In 1912 he came to
Shortsville where he lived for eight
years, then returning to Manchester.
He was married to Miss Lydia M.
Herendeen 48 years ago. He was one
of the original members of the first
Manchester Military Band, an organization
that gained a wide reputation.
He was also one of the first rural
mail carriers from the Shortsville post
office, engaging in that task in 1902.
Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter,
Mrs. Helen Harrington Howe of
Manchester, and one sister, Mrs. Elmer
VerPlanck, also of the same village.
Funeral services will be held from
his late home on Friday afternoon at
2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev.
Leon L. Swarthout, pastor of Manchester
Baptist church, assisted by
the Rev. A. W. Walker, pastor of Manchester
Methodist church. The burial
will be made in Brookside cemetery,
Shortsville.
