Wayne Mayes, 70, of Little River-Academy passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 at his home. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 at Reed’s Lake Cemetery with Rev. Brent Boatwright officiating. Visitation will be from 2-5:00PM on Friday, July 5, 2013 at Hewett-Arney Funeral Home in Temple.

Wayne was born May 18, 1943 to Mattie Alice Bleeker and Henry Lee Mayes in Mineral Wells, TX.

He graduated high school in 1961 in Tacoma, WA after being raised all over the country with his step-father, Loren Swett being in the U.S. Army. Wayne joined the U. S. Air Force in 1963 until 1967, serving during the Vietnam War being stationed in Thailand.

He married Rachel Nan Camp in 1969; although they were only married a few years they remained friends.

In 1973, Wayne became the store manager for Town & Country Convenience Store in Academy where he worked for 30 years before retiring. After retiring he worked part-time for the Post Office in Little River.

Wayne married Bonnie Sue Hudson on July 22, 1983 in Dice Grove, Texas. Wayne and Bonnie made their home in Little River-Academy where they raised their children. He coached Little League Baseball for several years. Wayne enjoyed bowling and bowled on the men’s league for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Academy and belonged to the Friendship Sunday School Class.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Bonnie Sue Mayes; children Hank Mayes of Temple, Carolyn Mayes Lawton and husband Michael Erickson, Jr. of Belton, Chris Mayes and wife Jenny of Austin, Sandy Mayes Sharp and husband Ron Sharp, Jr. of Little River, and Katie Sue Mayes of Temple. Wayne has numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren surviving him.

Wayne is also survived by his siblings, HL ‘Johnny’ Mayes of Belton, Weldon ‘Dee’ Easley of Gig Harbor, Washington, Linda Morgan of Temple, Robert Mayes of China Springs, Laurie Yeager of Indiana, Danny Mayes of Rogers, Mike Mayes of South Dakota, Joe Mayes of Arizona, Brenda Mayes-Whitcomb of Harker Heights and Thomas Mayes of Temple. In addition he has a host of nieces, nephews and cousins surviving him.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lee Mayes in 1985, Mattie Alice Swett in March 2010 and Loren Swett in August 2010, his first wife, Rachel Nan Camp Mayes in November 1983 and two great-granddaughters.
