Stephan was just a baby when his family moved from Sydney Mines Nova Scotia, after the death of his Grandmother Zofia Witkowski. The family first moved to Michigan, and stayed in a home purchased by his his grandfather Stephan, whom he was named after. His father Anthony Witkowski died in 1935, and his mother later moved the family to Arizonia. His mother Antonina, passed away in 1993 at the age of 102 years.
