Adam served in the Civil War for the Confederacy. He first enlisted May 2, 1862 at the age of 21 in Co. C 50th VA Infantry Regiment. He reenlisted in Co. F, 30th SS Regiment. By July 9 1864 he was a POW at Harper's Ferry and was confined at Washington, DC and Elmira, NY before being released May 17, 1865.
